When Debbie Parkhurst, 45, was home alone and choked on an apple, Parkhurst said she then began beating her chest, an action that might have attracted Toby’s attention. Toby pushed her to the ground and began jumping up and down. Toby’s jumping apparently managed to dislodge the apple from Parkhurst’s windpipe. “As soon as I started breathing, he stopped and began licking my face, as if to keep me from passing out,” she said.

Jo Ann Altsman suffered a heart attck while vacationing in the north woods of Presque Isle, Pennsylvania, USA. LuLu, a housebroken Vietnamese Pot-Bellied pig came to Jo Ann’s aid. Lulu took one look at Jo Ann and after ‘crying’ for a moment, she managed to push open the gate to get to a nearby road. Witnesses reported that Lulu would wait until a car approached, then calmly walk out into the road and lay down in front of the oncoming vehicle. When a driver failed to stop, LuLu would return to Jo Ann to check on her, and then leave again to try and summon help. After about forty-five minutes the determined pig finally managed to persuade a young motorist to stop and follow her to the Altsman’s mobile home. The man telephoned the emergency services and paramedics quickly arrived. As a reward, Lulu received, along with extensive local media coverage, a jam doughnut!

Ronnie Dabal was fishing for tuna in the choppy waters of Puerto Princesa Bay, Philippines, when a squall came upon him and turned his boat upside down. After battling with punishing waves for the next 24 hours on top of a piece of styropor, Dabal was losing his strength as darkness was coming. From out of nowhere, a pod of around 30 dolphins and a pair of whales came and started to flank him on both sides. The dolphins started alternately to nudge his tiny life raft using their pectoral fins towards the direction of land. Dabal said he passed out while the dolphins were doing their slow chore of nudging him to shore, and woke up on the beach of Barangay where he was finally assisted by local residents there.

In Nairobi, Kenya, a stray dog saved the life of a newborn baby girl after finding the abandoned infant in a forest. The dog apparently took the baby across a busy road and through some barbed wire to her litter of puppies. The dog apparently found the baby Friday in the plastic bag in which the infant had been abandoned, said Aggrey Mwalimu, owner of the shed where the animal was guarding its puppies. The 3,2 kg infant was taken to the hospital for treatment on Saturday. “She is doing well, responding to treatment, she is stable. … She is on antibiotics,” Kenyatta National Hospital spokeswoman Hanna Gakuo told the press. “Abandoned babies are normally taken to the Kenyatta National Hospital because it is a public hospital,” Gakuo said. “People are now donating diapers and baby clothes for this one.”

Peter Choyce, wheelchair-bound by a bad spine, was enjoying a sunny afternoon in the driveway of his neighbor’s house. He was typing on his laptop, his cat by his side. Two men in a car drove by, apparently saw what they thought would be an easy mark and stopped. In the space of a second or two, the assailant punched Choyce in the face, grabbed the laptop directly out of his lap — and was attacked by little Unshkins. Unshkins, a black cat with white paws, flew up in the face of the attacker, clawing frantically and bloodying the criminal’s face.

Buddy, a dog specially trained to call 911 when his owner suffers seizures grabbed the phone and whimpered for help. Stalnaker said he trained the animal to recognize when he had a seizure and respond by grabbing the phone and bringing it to him. When Buddy hears the operator, he puts the phone down and whimpers as if he was in distress. The 911 system matches the call to the address and dispatches emergency help. Buddy rode in the ambulance with Stalnaker to the hospital, and both were back home two days later.
